Brewers are proud suppliers of Dulux Trade who are continuing to lead the way in sustainability by introducing 25 per cent post waste recycled plastic in to its cans. The company’s Vinyl Matt White product will be the first to be sold in the new 25 per cent post waste recycled packaging, before being rolled out across other products within the Dulux Trade portfolio during 2012.
The introduction of 25 per cent post waste recycled packaging is part of the company’s wider approach to address all aspects of environmental performance, ranging from what goes into its products, to how they are disposed of in the field by the trade. With packaging forming a key element of this lifecycle, Dulux Trade has placed significant investment in improving the sustainable credentials of its cans, without compromising on technical performance.
Following rigorous testing, Dulux Trade has successfully incorporated 25 per cent post-consumer content into its plastic can packaging, which has helped reduce the carbon footprint of each container by approximately 19 per cent versus its traditional plastic counterpart (measured as gCO2e).
Decorators will notice a slight change in packaging with the new cans; going forward, the recycled content containers will be grey in colour, replacing the traditional white cans. Dulux Trade has also added clear branding on the lid of each can, so it’s easy for appliers to spot when in store.
Discussing the move, Hazel Shelmerdine, Assistant Brand Manager for Dulux Trade Core Products, comments: “Dulux Trade is committed to improving the environmental credentials of its products from cradle to grave, so that means exploring much more than just the ingredients of our paints. The move to post waste recycled content cans is a significant step for the company, as well as the wider coatings industry, and will have a real impact on the carbon footprint.
“Importantly for decorators, there’s no change in the technical performance of the packaging, so choosing the new recycled cans is a great way to ‘do their bit’ for the environment.”
The recycled content cans will be rolled out across Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt White 2.5l and 5l products, with the company’s Dulux Trade ready mixed coatings following suit later in 2012.

Dulux Trade, which is available at all Brewers branches, has launched a new and improved version of its Ecosure Gloss and Undercoat Pure Brilliant White, making it easier for professional appliers to achieve an excellent standard of finish and do their bit for the environment.
Improved opacity and adhesion are two key updates to the new Ecosure Undercoat, which enable appliers to achieve a higher standard of finish in less time. Similarly, Dulux Trade Ecosure Gloss has also been updated with benefits such as improved opacity and enhanced gloss levels, which enables the trade to consistently deliver a high quality, long lasting finish which stays white.
“Getting a balance between quality and environmental performance is a challenge increasingly faced by appliers. As such, we’ve placed significant investment in driving forward the standards of water-based systems such as our Ecosure Gloss and Undercoat to make it easier for the trade,” said Hazel Shelmerdine, Brand Manager for Dulux Trade Ecosure. “Following extensive research and development, water-based solutions now the best of both worlds – as well as being quick drying and achieving a high quality finish that stays white, these coatings offer excellent sustainability credentials which are becoming an increasingly important factor for appliers and their clients.”
The Dulux Trade Ecosure range is the product of a major research initiative with independent sustainability experts, Forum for the Future. Compared to standard solvent-based formulations , Dulux Trade Ecosure Gloss and Undercoat have 30 per cent lower carbon when used as a system, and 78 per cent lower VOCs. What's more, Ecosure paint cans contain 50 per cent recycled material.

We are pleased to announced that Brewers has acquired three new branches in the Midlands from TDS – Derby Stores Road, Leicester Freemen’s Common and Burton-Upon-Trent. The new properties extend our offering in the Midlands, adding to existing branches in Leicester and Derby.
Throughout their years in operation, TDS has built up a wealth of knowledge and were originally set up to rival the Brewers offering to both trade and consumers. Previously acquired by Travis Perkins when they took over Buck and Hickman, the TDS offering grew further and since, TDS has been a main source of decorating materials for local trade. As part of the acquisition, all of the existing branch managers will remain; Sarah Moseley looking after the Burton-Upon-Trent and Derby branches and Lynne Mount managing the Leicester branch. Both managers will be keeping on all members of their experienced team of employees, who have an extensive knowledge and understanding of the decorating supplies industry.
All branches stock a complete range of decorating materials and the Brewers acquisition means they are now able to offer the trade a larger variety of branded products, including Dulux, Crown and the Brewers paint range, Albany.
Stan Adams, Commercial Director at Brewers, comments: “We’re delighted that Sarah, Lynne and their teams at the three branches are joining us; they bring knowledge that is second-to-none. Over the last 12 months, we’ve felt that there was an opportunity for greater branch coverage in the Midlands; undoubtedly a number of our present customers will find it useful to have additional pick up points and we look forward to welcoming lots of new customers in 2012.”
