Dopamine Décor – Floral Folk
August 5th, 2024
What brings you joy? At Brewers, we
want to inspire you to create interiors that bring you nothing but happiness,
inspired by the latest trend, dopamine décor. Here is our Content Editor, Gemma
to talk you through her scheme and how she used the things that bring her joy
to inspire her look.
The Inspiration:
I have always been a massive fan of
flora and fauna. Whether it’s through textile design, illustration or art, I
have always been drawn to florals and landscapes. My idea of the perfect
afternoon would be a stroll through some beautiful country gardens, surrounding
myself in nature and even bringing a good book with me!
I absolutely love pattern and
storytelling, so when I discovered Scandinavian folk art, I knew I wanted to
incorporate this within my design. Scandi folk art can be characterised by
several floral motifs combined to create intricate patterns reminiscent of fairytales
and fables.
Colours and patterns used: Watercolour Stripe wallpaper in pink, Albany Lip Gloss, Thirst Quencher, Cypress, Butternut and Orchid.
The Design:
I started looking at examples of
Scandi folk art online to see some of the shapes and patterns that can be
achieved and out together a little inspiration board. I then sketched out the
space I had to work with and started experimenting with different patterns
until I was happy with the overall design. I used the alcove as my focal point
and used this to build out a series of patterns. Once I was happy with the
final look, I painted out parts of the design on lining paper to check I was
happy with the colour combination. I also decided to wallpaper inside the
alcove with a simple stripe design to mirror the linework found within my
painted design.
Creating The Look:
I started mapping my design out on the
wall using masking tape to create guidelines and light pencil marks to create a
rough grid to space out the design evenly. Once I had done this, I created
cardboard templates and sketched round these to create the whole design. Then
the fun could begin! I hand painted each motif, gradually building up the
colours and being careful not to lose my patience! After I had finished the
design, I applied the wallpaper that really finished off the whole look
beautifully.
Gemma’s top tips:
- Sketch out your design before you do anything. Taking time to plan during the design process is super beneficial as this will make painting the full design out so much easier.
- There is a balance between an organic looking design and making sure it’s spaced out properly - you don’t want the look to feel messy! Masking tape is your best friend here for achieving straight lines and giving yourself guidelines to work from.
- Allow the paint to dry fully before moving onto the next section – the last thing you want to do is create smudges when you have painstakingly painted out your design!
It was amazing to be able to create
this look and realise what I can achieve with some inspiration and the right
colours. This could design could be used to create more of a focal point around
fireplaces, adding more interest to a headboard or even upcycling furniture. I
am completely obsessed with this look and can’t wait to create more Scandi folk
art looks in my home!
