Dopamine Décor – Sensational Stripes!
August 5th, 2024
Decorating can create such a serene
feeling of achievement so why not create a standout space that brings you joy? Dopamine
décor is exactly that, the newest interior design trend that rejects trends! Studio
Head, Emma takes us through her look and how her graphic design skills have
been combined with a bold colour palette (and lots of masking tape!) to create the
most iconic look.
The Inspiration:
I am at my happiest when I’m on the
dancefloor! I love nothing more than blaring dance music from the 90s, closing
my eyes and just feeling the beat. To honour this, I wanted to create a bold
look that screamed nostalgia and fun!
The Design:
I knew I wanted to incorporate stripes
as we had created a candy cane look for a previous Christmas shoot and it
brought me so much joy! I digitally drew out the space and started playing
around with stripe patterns. I played around with vertical stripes, angled
stripes and horizontal stripes in the range of colours before I settled on the
right combination. I also decided to add a confetti section and graphical
triangles in the alcove to fill the whole space.
Creating The Look:
Getting the masking right was the key
to this look. I used the width of the masking tape to determine the width of
the stripes and spent a long time measuring and masking before committing to
painting! I had to create the look in stages and it took several days to finish
the wall. I started with the bottom of the wall and worked my way up as that
felt the most logical to me. I finished with the triangles which was the
scariest point, as there is a very small margin of error with black paint! I
was absolutely thrilled with the end result though.
Emma’s top tips:
- A 4” mini roller was my best friend when creating my design as it was the perfect width for the stripes and provided consistent paint coverage.
- I swear by Tesa Tape when working with stripes as it provides an excellent finish – it’s always nerve wracking before a tape pull and Tesa Tape really reduces the stress!
- Applying two coats of paint really helped with the vibrancy of the overall look.
I had so much fun bringing this look
to life and would love to recreate it in my bathroom at home!
