Dopamine Décor – Whimsical Waves
August 5th, 2024
When decorating, why not choose
something that reflects your personality that brings you joy? This is the foundation
of dopamine décor, a new interior design trend encouraging you to decorate in a
way that brings you nothing but happiness. Here is Dani, our email editor, who
has created her own under the sea oasis.
The Inspiration:
I moved to the south coast a couple of
years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. Being able to take long
walks on the beach just a stone’s throw away from my house is such a luxury and
I am so grateful to live where I do! I wanted to bring that happiness into my
design in a fun way, so I decided to make waves with my look!
The Design:
I wanted to keep the design nice and
simple and using only two colours. I used Cypress and Thirst Quencher as these colours
reminded me most of the sea for obvious reasons! I had seen a trend where
people were creating wave patterns as an alternative to a simple straight line
and knew I wanted to give it a go.
Creating The Look:
I painted the space first with two
coats of Cypress and painted the alcove with two coats of Thirst Quencher and
allowed this to dry fully. After this, I used a pencil to create my wave
design. I decided to not create symmetry as I wanted the look to feel more
organic. Once I was happy, I hand painted round the inside of the wave using an Albany Fitch Brush and then filled the gaps with an Albany Extra 3” brush.
Dani’s top tips:
- Make sure you use a small brush when painting the outline of the waves as this will help keep control of the paint.
- You can use round objects such as plates and bowls to help you achieve the wavy look, but I preferred hand drawing the design.
- Apply two coats of paint as this will create a finish with strong depth of colour.
- Wrap your rollers and brushes in tin foil or cling film in-between coats so you’re not washing paint out needlessly.
Obviously, this look is begging to be
used in a bathroom, but this design would also be a really fun way to decorate
doorways!
