What Will I Learn On The Course?

By the end of the day, you'll be able to:

·         Identify different types of wallpaper and know which one is right for your project.

·         Select and safely use the right tools and equipment.

·         Measure your wall accurately and work out exactly how many rolls you need.

·         Prepare a wall properly before you even open a roll.

·         Set out and mark plumb lines so your first length goes up dead straight.

·         Confidently match patterns so the joins are invisible.

·         Cut cleanly around light switches, sockets and into corners.

What Happens On the Day?

Step One: The Theory

The day starts in our training classroom where we cover why a feature wall can transform a room, basic safety around tools and equipment, and different types of wallpaper.

You'll learn how to read the label on a roll and understand the symbols printed on it, plus how pattern matching works, how to calculate roll quantities and how to approach the trickiest part of the job: papering around light switches.

Step Two: Preparing The Wall

We now move to the practical rooms where we’ll talk you through sanding away lumps and bumps and filling any holes in the wall before you start applying wallpaper.

On this course, we work with non-woven paper, a paste-the-wall product that lasts longer and won’t shrink when it’s dry.

Step Three: Mix Your Wallpaper Paste

You'll learn to mix wallpaper paste with water, or work with ready-mixed paste.

Step Four: Applying The Wallpaper To The Wall

You'll learn three different ways to apply paper to the wall — with a decorator's brush, and with a wallpaper smoother or spatula in both metal and plastic. Metal gives a sharper edge but risks damaging the paper; plastic is wider and more forgiving but doesn't cut quite as fine a line.

We also cover using a roller pole and spirit level correctly and demonstrate how to apply paper smoothly and squarely to the wall.

You’ll then get hands-on practice with a cutting knife and shown how to trim the wallpaper.

Step Five: How To Wallpaper Round A Socket And Switch

The bit that catches most people out. You'll get guided, hands-on practice with cutting and folding paper neatly around switches and sockets.

Step Six: How To Cut Wallpaper Into An Internal Corner

You’ll learn how to cut paper into an internal corner so the pattern keeps running and the finish stays sharp.
