Stripping wallpaper is a vital step
before redecorating. If old wallpaper is left on the walls, this could lead to
a bumpy, uneven finish. Whilst many gravitate towards a steamer to remove
wallpaper, this could lead to blown plaster and a much bigger project. Here are
two ways you can strip wallpaper without the need for a steamer.
The first thing you need to consider is the age and type of wallpaper.
Test a corner of wallpaper first to see how easily it can be removed.
Paste the wall wallpaper for example should come off in one easy strip.
Option One: Peel & Soak
- Start by peeling the top layer of wallpaper off in one piece or in sections.
- If you’re having trouble doing this, score the paper carefully with a knife.
- Soak the paper generously with warm water for approximately 10 minutes.
- Use a wallpaper scraper to remove the wallpaper, being careful not to gauge any of the wall.
- Once all the wallpaper has been removed, be sure to clean the walls ensuring all the glue residue has been removed.
Option Two: Wallpaper Stripper
- Use a perforator or Paper Tiger to pierce the wallpaper.
- Pop on a pair of gloves and fill a bucket with the diluted wallpaper stripper (as instructed on the bottle).
- Mix the solution together and apply to the wallpaper with a brush or roller.
- Wait for 15 minutes and repeat the process.
- Use a wallpaper scraper or use your hands to remove the paper.
- Once all the wallpaper has been removed, be sure to clean the walls ensuring all the glue residue has been removed
Once your walls have been cleaned, allow them to fully dry before applying any primers, wallpapers or paint. This will take between 3-7 days.
