Daniel Woolcock Of Paint Perfection Is In The Brewers Spotlight!

February 16th, 2024

I had the pleasure of speaking with Brush Wizard member, Daniel Woolcock of Paint Perfection Painting & Decorating to talk about his latest project, tools of the trade and some of his favourite finishes at the moment!

It’s lovely to chat to you Daniel, thank you for giving up your time, I know how busy you are at the moment! Let’s jump straight in, how long have you been a painter and decorator for?

It’s a pleasure! I got into the trade in 1998 when I was 18 just after training as a carpenter/joiner. I worked under a small decorating company who used to get the contract for David Wilson Homes as an apprentice working on newbuilds in Leicestershire. After this I worked for a shop fitting company as a decorator and only started working on residential homes in my 30s. I learnt such a wide variety of skills this way and I absolutely love being self-employed now.

I started Paint Perfection just before the pandemic, investing in my own van and of course my spray machines! I work with other self-employed decorators on larger jobs and always pride myself in being as clean and conscientious as possible.

Sounds like a fantastic journey. Talking about today, what project are you currently working on?

I have been working on a project for the past six weeks that involved an old dairy farm that had been turned into 4 new properties, as well as the original farmhouse. The properties feature these amazing, vaulted ceilings with salvaged beams from previous buildings. It was a real challenge because the beams were in really rough shape and cutting into such high ceilings proved tricky! It was really satisfying to restore the beams though and I am so happy with the results. There is ongoing maintenance at the properties, so I am really excited to see the final results!

The customer had their kitchen island painted in F&B Stiffkey Blue so we created a feature wall to match using Farrow & Ball Dead Flat and it looks incredible.

It certainly does, I for one would quite happily live there! What other products did you use in the project?

I used ISOMAT Ceiling Paint well…for the ceiling! Benjamin Moore Scuff X in Chantilly Lace for the woodwork and Tikkurila in Paper White for the walls. I also used Farrow & Ball Cornforth White and Borrowed Light in other areas of the house and they look beautiful!

Some fantastic finishes there - what other products do you like to use?

I would love to use Little Greene more as it’s an amazing product to apply. I am a full Benjamin Moore Scuff X convert though and their range of colours is incredible, I would highly recommend it!

And what are some of your favourite tools of the trade?

As I mentioned, I absolutely love spraying woodwork, it really does provide the best finish, so I would have to say my Graco GXFF Cordless sprayer. I also have a Graco handheld which I have put 120L of paint through and it never fails me! I keep my paint sprayers well maintained so they really do last.

For painting, Arroworthy are my favourite brushes to use, along with Albany rollers. When I visited Brewers at the P&D show last year, I was given a medium pile to try out and it is incredible! I’m so glad I gave it a go and will definitely be buying more in the future.

I also like to keep the houses I work in as clean and tidy as possible so I could not do my job without my Mirka Dustless Sander. My customers love it and have booked with me because I own one and it creates such a nicer working environment for myself…I don’t know how I coped without one! I also love Prodec protective film, it’s so easy to use and I can tape up doors quickly and easily so dust doesn’t escape to other rooms.

Ah wow, I bet customers love that level of service! Do you have any projects coming up you can’t wait to get started on?

I do! I will be working on a house renovation and I can’t wait to get started on the stairs in particular. The tread will be in a dark wood with white spindles that will be sprayed.
