Eric Morecambe mural unveiled in Lancashire thanks to Brewers Morecambe

Brewers supported a huge new mural celebrating comedy legend Eric Morecambe to mark what would have been the star’s 100th birthday.

Investing in local communities

Brewers Morecambe were pleased to play our part in creating the new mural, unveiled in May, by donating the paint and decorating materials needed.

The artwork, painted on the side of the former Hitchens Building close to Eric’s birthplace, features the much-loved comedian alongside long-time comedy partner Ernie Wise. The image is inspired by a classic archive photograph used in a vintage Radio Times listing.

Local celebrations

The mural forms part of a packed programme of celebrations taking place across the Lancashire resort to honour the entertainer’s centenary year.

Events include performances of West End hit Eric & Ern at Morecambe Winter Gardens this weekend, guided walks along a new Eric Morecambe trail and a musical tribute from Morecambe Brass Band.

Eric’s children, Gary and Gail Morecambe, will also take part in a discussion about their father’s legacy on Saturday 16th May. Further events and activities are expected to be added throughout the year.

Remembering Eric Morecambe

Eric Morecambe, born John Eric Bartholomew in Morecambe on May 14th, 1926, became one half of one of Britain’s most iconic comedy double acts. He later adopted the name of his seaside hometown as his stage surname.

David Waddington, chairman of Morecambe Business Improvement District, said: “This mural is a brilliant way to celebrate Eric’s 100th birthday and create something lasting for the town. Eric Morecambe remains an iconic figure not just locally, but nationally, and it feels right that we mark this milestone with a legacy project that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come.

“It’s also a fantastic example of what can be achieved when local artists, businesses and the community come together to celebrate Morecambe’s heritage.”
