Mental Health First Aiders At Brewers

May 14th, 2024

At Brewers, we are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and happy working environment to ensure our customers and colleagues thrive. One way in which we are striving to achieve this is by introducing mental health first aiders in the workplace. They are colleagues across the company who have volunteered for the role and can be there to provide support to those who may be suffering through a mental health crisis.

What does a mental health first aider do?

Mental health first aiders are able to recognise the signs and symptoms of common workplace mental health issues and know how to effectively guide a person towards the right mental health support. They have gained an understanding of mental health and all the factors that can affect wellbeing. They are equipped with practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental illness whilst also being able to provide some physical first aid. They have the confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress with an understanding on how to make mental health related adjustments when a colleague returns to work.

Why are mental health first aiders important?

Mental health first aiders have been equipped with the tools to not only help those who may be suffering from a mental health crisis, but also adopts a positive culture around mental health in the workplace. A lot of people feel the need to ‘leave their problems at the door’ when at work, but this is not always possible and can lead to a crisis. With trained members amongst our teams, colleagues know the people they can turn to in order to get the right help and support.

How do you become a mental health first aider?

Our mental health first aiders are trained by  St John’s Ambulance. Delegates are awarded the FutureQuals Level 3 Award in Mental Health: Workplace First Aider qualification, which will equip them with the knowledge to identify those who require mental health support and the confidence to offer assistance when required.
