In an unspoken exchange
between artists throughout history, the designers at Morris & Co. have
picked up the pen laid down by William Morris and John Henry Dearle to create
The Unfinished Works, an astounding series of wallpaper and fabric designs.
From The Huntington’s
remarkable library of documents come handcrafted and unmistakably original William
Morris and John Henry Dearle designs, translated across wallpapers, borders,
fabrics, weaves, and embroideries.
Previously incomplete
sketches have been thoughtfully uncovered and meticulously interpreted into new
design iterations, authentically reimagining these hidden treasures in
interiors through exceptional handcrafted techniques and processes.
The design team at Morris & Co., equipped with its own
extensive archive and brand history, has completed these pieces, honouring the
original documents with the detailed eye and creative talent of its modern-day
studio, upholding and honouring a 164-year legacy that can be enjoyed for
generations to come.

Discover The Collection Of Wallpapers:
1. Chamomile
Taken from an incomplete sketch, this design is attributed to William Morris. The Morris & Co. studio carefully evolved the original artwork. Where Morris had marked out stitches for embroidery, the design team retained this delicate linework, preserving the charm and honesty of the original drawing.
Available in Flax/Madder and
China Blue colourways.
2. Cornflower
A design by the artistic hands of John Henry Dearle, Cornflower is a bold composition in his signature vine-like style. This celebration of florals, features tulips, acanthus, daisies and, of course, the cornflower.
Available in Madder/Forest,
Russet/Teal, Rose/Woad and Lemon/Sage colourways.
3. Daisy & Oak
Daisy & Oak features a unique pattern repeat with a striking central motif of daisies and tulips. Initially designed as wallpaper and chintz, Daisy & Oak also features a scattering of acorns, forming a highly decorative design that is unmistakably Morris & Co.
Available in Powder Blue/Blush, Sage/Forest
and Madder/Teal colourways.
4. Etched Scrolling Tulip
Etched Scrolling Tulip draws out the delicate pencil lines found at the edges of the original artwork, adding a sense of depth and movement. A border has also been added to represent the design’s rug origins.
Available in Parchment and Faded
Indigo colourways.
5. Iris & Rose
This ornamental design has retained the shield motif of the original document, whilst celebrating the rose and iris flowers. Vine leaves weave through the background, and the shield’s dotted detailing adds playful charm.
Available in Indigo/Crimson, Bayleaf/Weld
and Indigo/Thyme colourways.
6. Lent Lily
Bold, stylised floral motifs of pointed tulips contrast with the swirls of the iconic acanthus leaf. Taken from a rarely seen watercolour artwork in the archive, the design retains the original hand-drawn movement.

7. Norbury
Named after Norbury Brook, a tributary of the River Wandle, the ogee-shaped design reflects the river’s ebb and flow. Originally a woven hanging in an ecclesiastical style, Norbury features a detailed floral border and leafy damask structure.

8. Oak & Blossom
Oak & Blossom was initially intended for stained glass but has been refined and repainted. A double stripe underlies a graceful arrangement of blossoms, oak leaves, and acorns.

9. Peony Trellis
Originally intended as a border design, the pattern has been reimagined as an all-over stripe, with a climbing trellis and stylised florals, forming a subtle ogee pattern.
Available in Soft Blue/Nettle, Sage
and Bayleaf/Slate colourways.
10. Persian Tulip
Originally designed as a textile, Persian Tulip features elegant teardrop-shaped motifs whilst honouring the traditional Persian aesthetic admired by William Morris and John Henry Dearle.
Available in Umber/Mineral Blue
and Teal colourways.
11. Scrolling Tulip
Intended as a carpet design, this pattern has been carefully refined, retaining its distinctive shaping. The graceful interlacing of tulip heads and acanthus leaves creates a rhythmic, meandering pattern, typical of Morris’s enigmatic hand.

12. Walthamstow
Honeysuckles, daisies, and acanthus leaves all swirl together in a striking repeat, edged by a checkerboard border. Adapted from artwork for a carpet, the design team have transformed this into a mirrored design, typical of 19th century style.

Indigo/Gold colourways.
13. Wild Tulip & Vine
This gentle, rhythmic path is created from leafy vines, vertical scrollwork and stylised flowers that is commonly associated with the works of John Henry Dearle.
Available in Coral/Teal, Multi, Nettle/Woad
and Rose/Linen colourways.
14. Woodbell & Anemone
The document was originally a
small sketch consisting of an anemone as the central motif surrounded by
bluebells that has been transformed into simple yet striking ogee pattern.
