Brewers Gillingham Help Restore The Medway Queen

Brewers are proud sponsors of the Medway Queen, a paddle steamer located at Gillingham Docks. We’ve been supporting the Medway Queen Preservation Society since 2022 when we donated supplies and £300 towards restoration costs. This year, our Gillingham branch donated a sample of Noxyde Plus to stop rainwater leaking through the top deck of the vessel. 

Tempor incididunt ut labore

For several years the Medway Queen workshop crew tried numerous solutions to prevent rainwater entering from the top deck ruining the fittings in the lower decks. Rainwater can also be corrosive on the rivets in the bilges so it was important that the team get it fixed.

The top deck was covered with durbar plates to help eliminate the rainwater problem but the rain still seeped between the plate joints. The crew tried mastic and tape products to waterproof the joints between the plates. These all had limited success due to harsh weather exposure, plus the movement of the plates expanding and contracting.

Investigations were conducted with the help of a local marine engineer where they reviewed options for treating the deck. No formal estimates were conducted but costs were expected to be between five to six figures.

During a conversation with their local Brewers rep, a new product called Noxyde Plus was suggested to treat the deck. Brewers Gillingham kindly provided a small sample for the crew to try. Following the trial, the crew applied Noxyde Plus to the joints between the plates, over the bottom of the stanchions, over the capping boards and over the base of fixtures on the top deck. The product was a success, eliminating 99% of water ingress.

The crew applied two coats of Noxyde Plus and plan on applying a third coat before using an approved deck paint. During some recent heavy showers, the team were pleased to see there was no water leaking through the deck. 

The cost of the treatment has been achieved for around £600 which, even if the product needs to be reapplied annually, is a huge saving for the Medway Queen Preservation Society.
