The Big Hoot is Coming to Ipswich!

May 19th, 2022

We got in touch with one of the artists participating in The Big Hoot Ipswich Anita Argent, to find out more about her owl Olivia and how she was able to find her perfect colours with Brewers.

Anita is an architectural and interior designer by day and artist by night. Anita’s design eye gives her a real passion for colour and is inspired by nature. She says ‘Scientists have proven that our wellbeing can benefit from an improved connection to nature, so I try to use this ethos to inform my designs.  One of the ways to improve this connection is by referencing nature through the patterns, textures, materials etc. used or in this case the colours that I selected.

The Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 is the third art trail brought to Ipswich by St Elizabeth Hospice in partnership with creative producers Wild in Art, following the success of Pigs Gone Wild 2016 and Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk 2019.

As part of The Big Hoot 2022, 50 ornately decorated owl sculptures, featuring designs celebrating all things Suffolk, will be scattered throughout Ipswich showcasing the wealth of artistic talent of the county and beyond, as part of the biggest free art event in Suffolk which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the town.

‘‘I contacted the Leicester branch of Brewers Decorator Centres for advice and ordered paints to be tinted to my exact requirements, which were delivered to my door the next day!  I was delighted with the colours and proceeded to mix smaller quantities of the paints together (in differing proportions) in order to create the gradient effect for my sculpture.’’

We asked Anita a bit more about Olivia and her colour inspiration for the design:

‘I chose the sunset as the inspiration for my colour palette, using a colour gradient from pink to yellow to represent serene twilight skies.  As I prepared my owl proposal for the art trail digitally, when I was selected, I then wanted to source paints as near to my submission image as possible.  I reviewed multiple colour swatches against my proposal and also how the two swatches complemented each other, before settling on a pink and yellow for my project.

Every year St Elizabeth Hospice delivers free care to over 3,000 patients and their families, who are living with progressive or life-limiting illness, throughout East Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney. Centered on an individual's needs, the hospice provides specialist support, whenever and wherever it is needed, whether at home, in the community or at the hospice. These services cost £12.9m to facilitate each year, with the independent charity raising 70% of funds via revenue streams and the generosity of the community such as retail shops, donations, and fundraising activities.

The Big Hoot Ipswich 2022 will be coming to Ipswich between the 19th June – 3rd September, so be sure to visit Oliva and the rest of her feathered friends soon!
