Additional information

Surface Preparation

Ensure the surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound and free from wax, oil or any other contamination. If wax had been used clean the surface thoroughly with white spirit prior to sanding.

Bare wood should be sanded to a smooth surface, always working with the grain. Sound previously varnished surfaces should be lightly sanded to provide a key. Remove dust.

Existing varnished surfaces which are unsound or in poor condition can be stripped back to bare timber.

Application

  • Stir thoroughly prior to use.
  • Can be applied by brush, roller or spray.
  • If applying by brush, apply evenly using light strokes following the grain of the wood.
  • If rollering, use a short nap mohair roller.
  • For best results 3-4 coats are recommend on new wood and 2-3 coats on previously varnished surfaces.
  • For coloured varnish apply coat on coat until you achieve the desired colour.
  • Prior to application of the final coat or if the overcoating time is exceeded lightly abrade with fine glass paper working with the grain and remove dust.
  • The vranish will appear cloudy when wet but will quickly dry to a clear or translucent finish.
  • When applying on new or bare wood, thin the first coat with up to 10% water.

Clean Up

Remove as much paint as possible from the equipment before cleaning. Clean with warm water, rinse and dry thoroughly.
