Mineral Paints - Everything You Need To Know!

October 7th, 2024

At Brewers, we stock a wide range of mineral paints that are designed for older buildings. Traditionally used mineral surfaces in heritage buildings require a highly breathable paint. Here we dive into some of the mineral paint finishes available from the best brands in the industry.

Graphenstone use sustainably sourced, traditional raw materials (including lime, calcium carbonates and natural minerals) and combine them with the ultimate in material innovation and technology by fusing them with graphene, to deliver a breathable, natural mineral based coating, with increased surface adhesion and Class 1 durability.

Graphenstone uses one of the oldest and most traditional of all building materials, lime, as the base ingredient to its natural based mineral coatings.

They use the highest quality natural raw materials (their lime is 98% pure) giving an unparalleled, non-yellowing white, to produce one of the most ecological paints available in the world. They are also incredibly easy to apply by brush, roller or spray.

Keim mainly supply multiple mineral paint finishes that are eco-friendly and are ideal for heritage buildings that have lime plaster substrates.

Rather than using a synthetic bonding agent such as vinyl, Keim mineral based paints fuse with the mineral surface and essentially becoming part of it.

The colours used in Keim paints come from naturally occurring earth pigments that enhances the integration of the paint with the mineral surface.

For example, the Natursetin colour collection celebrates the diverse mineral composition of natural stones found in Germany. This colour collection is perfect for the restoration or design of facades with natural stones or buildings in a similar environment.

Earthborn’s breathable Claypaint is a luxurious, ultra-matt finish for interior walls and ceilings. Made using a unique eco-friendly clay recipe, it results in a highly breathable flat matt paint that it is especially suitable for use over lime.

Unlike many conventional emulsions, it doesn’t seal the walls, but instead, lets air and water vapour flow freely through its surface, reducing the likelihood of moisture build up.

Trapped moisture can cause paint to bubble, peel and eventually blow completely and can also lead to much bigger problems within the fabric of the building itself. Claypaint however allows the walls to breathe.

Available in a beautiful palette of 72 shades this deliciously thick and creamy paint goes on like a dream and often requires fewer coats than conventional emulsions.  There are also no horrible smells or emissions.
