The Brewers Award at Towner Interational

July 15th, 2020

Following the success of the Brewers Towner Commission, Brewers are delighted to once again support Towner with their new biennial exhibition of contemporary art; Towner International. Following an open call, 24 artists have been selected by an esteemed panel including Polly Staple (Director of Collections, Tate Britain), Turner Prize nominated artist Mike Nelson, and Noelle Collins (Curator, Towner Eastbourne). The Brewers Award of £10,000, sponsored by Brewers Decorator Centres, will be given to one of the exhibiting artists along with mentoring from the Towner team.

Mark Brewer, Chairman, Brewers Decorator Centres, said, “The Brewers Award represents our ongoing commitment to the arts scene not just locally in our home county of Sussex, but both nationally and internationally too. After the success of the Brewers Towner Commission, Dance Diagonal, we’re delighted to once again work with Towner Eastbourne on a programme that celebrates a diverse range of art across various media. The Brewers Award aims to recognise and encourage the exceptional skill that will soon be on display at Towner International.”

Ten artists have been chosen from the regions of Sussex, Kent & Hampshire, ten from elsewhere across the UK and four from international locations. The exhibition will explore how artistic communities are recording and responding to the economic, political and environmental changes that are unfolding across the world today. These themes will be explored through work in a wide range of mediums from photography and moving image to sculpture, installation, ceramics, painting and print.

Towner International will be on view at Towner Eastbourne from 6th October to 10th January 2021. During this time, The Brewers Award will be announced so watch this space for more updates.

About Brewers Towner Commission

Towner Eastbourne, an iconic building set in the culturally rich Devonshire quarter of the town, became the canvas of an art installation by Lothar Götz: Dance Diagonal, the Brewers Towner Commission in Summer 2019 and will remain on view until Spring 2021.

Artist Lothar Götz was selected from sixty artists and designers who applied to the open call, with a strikingly colourful geometric design and which is now one of the biggest murals in the UK. Lothar is pictured above (right), with Mark Brewer, Chairman of Brewers.

Over 900L of Albany Smooth Masonry paint was supplied by Brewers in hand mixed shades to ensure the vibrancy of the design was brought to life. To celebrate 100 years of Albany, Dance Diagonal was used as the backdrop of the celebratory videos.
