Painter and Decorator Helps Win First Prize at Hampton Court Flower Show

August 8th, 2022

Brewers Guildford (The Pines) customer, Dave Tiller and associate Mark, were asked to paint exterior walls for Garden Designer Matthew Childs for his upcoming garden at the annual Hampton Court Flower Show.

The garden was a conceptual space to raise awareness of the fantastic work of the children’s charity Over the Wall (OTW). OTW and Japanese healthcare company Takeda support children living with rare and serious illnesses and disabilities along with their families.

The circular garden design invites visitors of the garden to step ‘over the wall’ to discover a space full of vivid planting.

A winding path leads visitors towards the sunrise opening in the wall, symbolising new possibilities.

Elements of Japanese aesthetic have been included to represent Takeda’s Japanese heritage.

Dave and Mark had to meet the brief of painting the walls in colours that were as close to Over the Wall’s three main colours as possible.

With Neil at Brewers Guildford on hand to help, they were able to use Brewers’ bespoke colour match service to get just the right hue.

Working closely with garden builders, Yoreland Design, Dave and Mark ensured the right finish on the rendered walls was used so the colours created the most impact on the overall design.

This was an even harder challenge during this summer’s heatwave!

The project took just over 3 weeks to complete and was awarded the Best Show Garden and Yoreland Design achieved the Best Construction Award, with Matthew winning the coveted Tudor Rose Award for his garden design.

The garden was also shown on BBC’s Gardeners World and mentioned how the walls really brought the garden to life.

Dave said “Myself & Marky went away feeling pretty chuffed that we were part of a team that won the top award at the biggest flower show in the world…I’ll put that in my display cabinet along with my 10 metre swimming badge!

All the team who worked on the project met up on the Friday at the show and had a celebratory drink together. Many people commented on the paintwork and how lovely the colours looked, so once again well done the guys and girls at Brewers!

I now feel I need to take up my Astro turf and start planting, add some rocks, a touch of rattan furniture, BBQ and a nice water feature!
