Brewers Spotlight: KH Decorating

As we continue to chat to some of our amazing customers, we got in touch with Brush Wizards member, Karl Hancock of KH Decorating to find out more about his P&D career!

It’s so nice to meet you, Karl! How long have you been a painter and decorator for?

I have been decorating for 14 years and running KH Decorating for the last 8 years.

I fell in to decorating! I started off at Nescot college in Epsom on the Painting and decorating course where I got an apprenticeship at the age of 17, I stayed with the company for 3 or 4 years while I completed my level 1 and 2 diploma and NVQ learning the basics of decorating, spraying and wallpaper hanging before setting out alone and starting KH Decorating.

Sounds great! In those 14 years, what has been your most memorable job?

I have had the privilege to carry out work in many luxury homes, but the kitchen resprays has to be one of my favourites. To take a dated and tired kitchen and completely transform the room and see a client's reaction really makes me feel like I have achieved something. For me kitchen respray tend to carry the biggest WOW factor. 

One of my favourites has to be on a property in Woldingham, I was tasked with transforming a large Clive Christian kitchen, to bring it from a discoloured yellow to a modern grey with a darker grey island. the client then went on to have new worktops installed and flooring which really sets the room off, totally changing the feel and appearance to the area!

It looks incredible, I think people really underestimate how much difference painting kitchen cabinets can make, especially when replacing a whole kitchen can cost a fortune! What are your favourite products to use?

Benjamin Moore Scuff-X is my go-to for woodwork, I find this a great product with brilliant opacity and it’s extremely durable. I tend to go for either Johnstone’s cleanable matt for walls and ceilings, or Isomat Professional depending on client's requirements and budget.

My local brewers branch is in Crawley, I find the staff here extremely helpful and friendly. They are always willing to go above and beyond to source products that they may not stock or carry in a sensible time frame.
