From Canvas To Walls - Find Out More About This Muralist's Journey!

For over a decade, Chris Bardell of Chrisbardellart has been
painting on canvas, but last year he decided to switch things up and started
creating murals in his hometown of Clacton-on-Sea and beyond…so where better to
buy his supplies than his local Brewers Decorator Centre!
Chris started dabbling in muralism last year but has really
taken off in the past month after creating a mural for a local restaurant in
Walton on the Naze, Eastcoast5.
“I was really lucky that with the restaurant, they gave me free
reign to create whatever I’d like, the only brief was to make the wall as eye catching
as possible!”
“I love working with bright colours, so using an octopus as my
subject, I was able to create a black outline and completely obliterate the
white walls with colour.”
After the success of this mural, another client commissioned a
piece on the side of her house.
“This brief was a real mixture of the client and me. I love portraiture but the client didn’t have a specific person in mind, so we settled on the Buddah, recreated in the brightest way possible”
“I love using Sandtex Trade High Cover Smooth for my murals and I selected a range of RAL colours to bring the Buddah to life.”
“I applied 2 layers of Sandtex for the background to create a full base layer of colour, before drawing my outline and adding a further two layers of colour and adding finer details.”
“I finished the piece with 2 coats of Polyvine Decorators Varnish in Dead Flat (the 2L was just enough!)”
When asked why Chris decided to switch things up, he said:
“I've always enjoyed painting on canvas but sometimes I found I
lost the love for it.”
“But with murals, there’s something about them, maybe because I
get to see the mural any time I’d like, and others get to see it too.”
“Being able to work in different spaces is refreshing and it
feels good knowing many people can admire the work for years to come!”
