We're Going Potty For This Transformation At Eastbourne Studio Pottery!
October 11th, 2024
The Brewers Foundation were thrilled
to donate 17.5L of Paint to Eastbourne Studio Pottery to help transform the exterior
of their studio space.
Eastbourne Studio Pottery is a
professional ceramics studio in the heart of Eastbourne. They offer classes for
all abilities and ages, led by a team of dedicated artist educators and
teachers who offer a range of taster sessions, talks and specialist workshops.
As a Community Interest Company, they provide opportunities for all members of
the community to explore their creativity, share their facilities and
experiment with clay. They work with community groups to offer bespoke
workshops and support well-being through the practice of craft.
The pottery was opened in 2017 and
have welcomed 1000s of students to their classes, created bespoke workshop
programmes for local community groups, provided work experience opportunities
for young people and supported makers to develop their craft businesses.
The pottery wanted to transform the
exterior of the space to make the studio as welcoming on the outside as it is
on the inside. They hosted free collage workshops for the community led by
local artist Maja Jones to create a vision for how the exterior could be
transformed with a low-cost, feasible design.
The regular Friday group from
Eastbourne Mencap already made ceramic planters that line the steps to
complement the large windows that wrap around the building alternate with
narrow sections of rendered masonry. These sections were then painted in three blues,
two greens and a warm and welcoming sunshine yellow for the entrance. A mix of
Dulux Weathershield and Zinsser Allcoat was used to achieve the perfect finish
for the studio’s new bright and bold exterior.
The studio was awarded funding by the Arts Council and East Sussex Arts Partnership to invite 60 local groups to take part in free, artist-led pottery workshops where they made plates using a whole variety of techniques. The finished plates were be exhibited at the Towner Eastbourne last month and all the workshop participants will be invited to a special tea party at the close of the exhibition.
