How To Redecorate Artex Ceilings

October 18th, 2024

Artex is a surface coating used to create different textures on a ceiling. It was very popular during the 70s and 80s…but not so much now! Here is our guide to Artex ceilings and how to safely redecorate them.

What are Artex ceilings and are they dangerous?

Artex is a decorative plaster used on ceilings and sometimes walls that was the height of fashion during the 70s and 80s. This means that homes containing Artex that were built before the 1990s are highly likely to contain asbestos as this was a common material in Artex during this time period. If the Artex is undamaged, there is no risk to health, but if there are signs of cracking or movement or you’re planning to renovate, consult an asbestos expert immediately. Any exposure to asbestos can have significant health implications and should be taken very seriously.

Key Things To Note When Removing Artex:

  1. ALWAYS leave it to the professionals
  2. Test the Artex for asbestos by a professional
  3. NEVER sand down Artex
  4. ALWAYS wear the correct PPE if in the presence of asbestos

Painting Artex:

If you have had your Artex tested for asbestos and it’s safe, it is recommended to smooth the Artex first before painting it, as the textured surface could lead to paint chipping or failure. If you have had your Artex professionally removed, you will also need to replaster before painting.

For the perfect result, hire a plasterer to give you a nice smooth finish before painting can commence. Once you have a fine finish to work with, a professional decorator will be able to prepare and decorate fresh plaster with ease.

Ceiling Paints:

There are a range of ceiling paints on the market that have been specifically designed to give a flat, matt, consistent finish on ceilings for a great look. For example, AF1 from Albany has anti-flashing properties which is a common issue when applying paint to ceilings. Flashing is a common issue where some patches of the ceiling can look shinier than others giving an inconsistent appearance. Benjamin Moore, Zinsser and ISOMAT have also developed finishes specifically for ceilings.
