Do It Yourself: Art Students Create Large-scale Murals at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Art and design students at Lancaster and Morecambe College (LMC) have transformed a previously plain stairwell into a vibrant creative space, thanks to a large-scale mural project supported by the Brewers Foundation.

The project gave 22 art and design students their first opportunity to work on large-scale wall murals, helping them develop practical painting skills and confidence outside the classroom. With a £250 donation from the Brewers Foundation, students were able to bring their designs to life using professional-grade paint and decorating materials.

Brewers Morecambe branch supplied 10 litres of Macpherson Durable Acrylic Matt, a hardwearing paint ideal for high-traffic environments such as colleges and public buildings, the students were also provided with essential decorating sundries including:

  • Paint brushes and rollers
  • Masking tape
  • Floor coverings
  • Paint trays

These materials ensured the murals could by completed to a professional standard while giving students hand-on experience with industry-used products.

From Community Project to College Transformation

Originally, the students were due to create wall art for a local organisation. However, when the project could not be completed within the required timescales, the focus shifted to improving the college’s own learning environment.

Programme Area Manager at Lancaster and Morecambe College, John Lambert, said:

“Students were offered the opportunity to create a large piece of wall art for a local organisation, for which the Brewers Foundation awarded sponsorship for paint and materials. Unfortunately, that project was not achievable within the timescales given. This instead gave the students the opportunity to work on a project within their own college building, and Brewers very kindly allowed them to keep the funding to realise the project.”

The result is a colourful and inspiring stairwell within the college’s arts centre, now enhanced by student-designed murals.

Graham Armstrong, Branch Manager at Brewers Morecambe, commented:

“The students had been looking for a large-scale art project for some time, so it was great to see them transform a drab stairwell into something creative and inspiring.

Working at this scale is something the students had never done before, and we hope this experience will give them the confidence to take on similar projects in the future. We’re proud to support local education and community initiatives and hope to be involved in more projects like this going forward.”
