Memory Lane Makes Meaning With Music

Brewers were thrilled to donate £500
to Memory Lane, an organisation dedicated to supporting people with dementia.
Memory Lane exists to support people
with dementia and their carers by providing activities that they can attend
together. It aims to create a culture
that respects and values each other’s differences and sees these differences as
an asset.
Memory Lane is all about enjoying
activity that is manageable, fulfilling and fun. Many of the frustrations of
day-to-day living can be left behind and the experience of shared moments of
pleasure and laughter help to sustain those facing the relentless demands of this
challenging illness. A group of dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to ensure
people can fully benefit from Memory Lane.
The £500 donation was used towards the
costs of engaging professional singers and the purchase of some new
tambourines. The organisation runs fortnightly music sessions and they also
organise special events where an opera singer and teacher comes into a school to
teach the children and Memory Lane members to sing together. Memory Lane worked
with Intergenerational Opera in conjunction with St Andrews School to carry out
the special 5-week programme.
“We
believe in not charging a set fee to those who attend but ask for voluntary
donations. We therefore greatly rely on our amazing volunteers (most of
whom are former carers), fund-raising and the generosity of others, such as
yourselves, in order to be able to carry on.” Deb Crook, Memory Lane
