Proud Decorators Making a Real Feature of Their Work!

October 29th, 2021

We got in touch with two of our proud decorator competition winners to find out a bit more about their time as painters and decorators.

Dan Di Maria - @DansDecoratingDesign

How long have you been a painter and decorator for?

I was 17 when I got into Painting and Decorating through my uncle, he took me to work with him for a couple of days to earn a bit of cash, as I was going on holiday and wanted some spending money. It was then when I was asked to do an apprenticeship with Taylor Wimpey, so I decided to give it a go, as I really enjoyed it. I finished my 3-year apprenticeship, but ended up in retail, but always continued painting here and there privately on the side. It wasn’t until February this year I decided to start my own business and what a success it has been. It’s been a busy year and business is thriving; it goes to show that hard work and pride in your work really pays off!

How did you get into designing feature walls?

I got into feature walls as it seemed to become a growing trend. I’ve always been handy, so I thought I’d give it ago, it wasn’t too difficult, and its basic carpentry if you know what you’re doing. After practice on friends’ and families’ homes, it wasn’t long before I was creating them for my customer’s. And the outcome’s certainly proven that. My customers love them! I have had great feedback, and I look forward to creating new designs for future clients.

How did it feel winning our Proud Decorator Competition?

Winning proud decorator of the month came as a bit of a shock to me, I never win anything! I entered with doubts and I was proven wrong, as I received the message that I won! It really made my day and encouraged me to make even better projects and challenge myself to new things. I’ve not been doing it for long, but my progress so far really has paid off. I take pride in my work and I am certainly proud of my creations, as are my customers.

After receiving my £100 vouchers I decided to use my winnings on new brushes, rollers, scuttles and other accessories for on-the-job use. It’s nice to have new tools and equipment and not at my expense, I am grateful to have been chosen.

Dan Flynn – @DLFlynnPaintDec

How long have you been a painter and decorator for?

I have been fully qualified with NVQ level 2 for 11 years.

Tell us about some projects you have worked on!

My favourite has been either the ceiling I sent in for the pizza restaurant or I did a scalloped feature for a nursery which was really challenging but came out beautiful.

How did it feel winning our Proud Decorator Competition?

It was a great feeling to win, makes me even more proud of my work.

The vouchers have gone on materials for me to do a project at home (dark grey woodwork on the staircase with a white wall).
