Sharing Colourful Community Stories With The Vibrancy Of Albany

Muralist and fine artist, Frank Creber, has used the cityscape of
East London and the social life that lies beneath as his subject for 30 years.
His latest mural in Whitechapel used Albany Smooth Matt Masonry Paint to portray
the colourful lives and stories that have been told throughout the mural.

The local community had a vision and needed Frank’s help to bring this vision to life.
After receiving a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, they wanted to create a mural that not only improved the area but also celebrated the local people and heritage of Whitechapel.
It took Frank 3 months to create
a design that featured 15 portraits of local people as well as including over
30 stories about the local area.
The Tenants and residents Association said: “Our project was community-led and provided a focal point to broaden and deepen bonds between residents and local groups involved in uncovering our shared heritage and creating a public artwork in celebration of who we are.
"Older generations hold living memories of important historical
moments, and we wanted to capture these while we still can.”
Albany Smooth Matt Masonry in 14 colours were used to paint the mural due to the vibrant depth of colour and easy application.
Brewers Aldgate
were thrilled to supply the project as the mural is so close to the store
itself with one of the team even growing up on the street directly next to the
mural.
Frank said: “To understand the essence of Whitechapel is to see
the people and buildings woven together through time. Numerous friendships have
blossomed as we worked with the community and schools to bring the mural images
to life.”
“I would like to thank all
the individuals who generously gave their ideas for the mural, I have made
lasting friendships with so many people, who were so kind and supportive during
the painting of the mural.”
The response to the mural so far has been incredible.
Over three hundred people attended the grand unveiling
of the mural with Sir Ian McKellen creating a buzz at the mural unveiling – not
only with his thoughtful speech but also by spending time chatting with local
residents, the project team and guests.
Weeks after, people are still talking about it!
A local resident, Alan said: “The
mural is a really good idea to improve the area, it will give the place a lift.
It’s great that the resident’s association is doing this”
