A Wonderfully Welsh Work of Art in Albany!

April 27th, 2023

73-year-old art teacher, Hilda Smith, has been teaching art lessons for over 25 years. She popped into Brewers Newport after she was commissioned to create a stunning mural!

Hilda enlisted the help of one of her students, Elinor after a retail manager commissioned the mural for her home in Upper Bargoed, overlooking stunning Welsh Valleys. Hilda and Elinor used their backdrop for inspiration and created a design based around mining as requested by their client. Hilda headed into Brewers Newport where she was able to buy Albany Smooth Masonry, varnish and sundries within her budget to complete the project.

Hilda started teaching Elinor when she was 8 years old, and she is now 28! Elinor is an accomplished artist and Hilda knew their art styles would complement each other. Hilda worked on the large-scale pieces using large rollers and brushes whilst Elinor worked on the finer details including the intricately painted daffodils.

The mural took around 20 hours over 5 days and luckily the weather was dry, but a bit chilly! The lady who commissioned the work was absolutely delighted with their creation and is sure to catch the attention of passers-by.
